I am puppy-sitting again and not at home in front of my computer where I do my blogging. I did however get an alert recently letting me know I had written this post 10 years ago, and did I want to share it again. As it wasn’t read by many people back then I am thinking, why not? It’s a fun story but rereading it I’m not sure if I would have used quite the same language if I’d written it today. Despite the fact I was writing about myself and my friends, it comes across as a tad sexist to my 2026 ears. It is a story from over 40 years ago so things were very much like that back then, but even over the last 10 years things have moved on yet again, which is a good thing, so our against the odds performance now doesn’t seem as remarkable. Anyway, let me know what you think and as you all know by now, I always reply!

Don’t think that would have ever happened in 1980s Aberdeen. We still had a lot of American male bosses that had come across from Texas in the first wave of drilling. Latterly there probably were a fair few female bosses.

I am actually although hard to think we’re all at state pension age (just about) now. Haven’t been in a quiz with her since though so not sure if she could still come up with the goods.

A great triumph! In my time with the oil tankers some years later I can confirm that, although things had come along a bit in the interim, there would still certainly have been a good few noses put out of joint had an all-female team won the quiz.

Yes things change but very slowly. Starting work in the ’60s would have been so different to my experiences in the ’80s and of course now it is very different for DD.
I’m very sad today since hearing of the death of Dolly Parton and of course I’m reminded of her starring role in the film 9 to 5. She looked like many of the “oil secretaries” I worked with at that time – the blonde hair, the make-up and the clothes. As we all know Dolly was no fool and neither was her character in the film but people make assumptions don’t they. Anyway, it was quite the fashion back in the ’80s – permed blonde hair, white high heeled shoes and sunbed tans. Don’t know why such a big thing was made of Dolly’s look – it was glam and it was very Nashville. They all looked like her but there was only one Dolly. There will never be another.
